Mathematics at JPS

Maths at Jumeirah Primary School is a fantastic subject. In fact, this year 87% of our students said that they love learning Maths at JPS. We follow the British curriculum for Maths and children learn for an hour each day.

The curriculum covers number, calculating, measures, shape and space, data handling and of course using and applying maths in the real world. Our children work with lots of practical equipment and try out their maths in many different real life situations.

In FS and Years 1-3 the children learn Maths in their own classes and after this in year 4-6, they are set for their Maths lessons according to ability.

A key strength of the school is the outstanding progress and attainment in mathematics.

In Year 6, students were very adept at interpreting and analysing data, and applying their mathematical skills to solve everyday problems.

In mathematics, all students’ progress and attainment were outstanding in mathematics including Emirati children, more able children and children with specific learning needs, particularly those with dyslexia.

Mathematics and science often made good and relevant links to real-life contexts.

Mental Maths Passport

Each child from Year 2 upwards has a mental maths passport which encourages them to learn number facts with quick recall e.g. number bonds, times tables. They work on these with parents and teachers each week.

Maths Fair

What a fabulous time every one had at the first ever JPS Maths Fair. Each class in years 1-6, as well as each specialist department, worked hard to design an exciting stall to run, then worked on the advertising, pricing and organization of the stall!

Sunday – Tuesday saw much planning and practising, ready for the stalls on Wednesday and Thursday.

It was amazing seeing how capable the children were when running the stalls and dealing with money, and how enthusiastic and engaged each and every child was.

We managed to raise a massive an estimated 15000 to send to the Pakistan Flood relief. Thank you to all parents, staff and children involved for making the fair such a success. We look forward to next year!
