DSIB Report 2010

'OUTSTANDING' Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau Report

You will be aware from news reports, that KHDA have now published the inspection reports for all schools in Dubai.  In October 2010, Jumeirah College was inspected by a team of international and local inspectors from the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau.  Until this time, the findings of the report have had to remain confidential and subject to moderation, but I am delighted to announce that the overall grading for the College is “Outstanding”.

We were never complacent in our approach to this latest round of inspection, and I do feel that the report endorses all that we know is great about Jumeirah College whilst at the same time, sets us new goals to address for the future.  Indeed, since the inspection some months ago, I know that the recommendations of the report have already been actioned and we can already evidence improvements.

You will recall last year that the key issue we were tasked with addressing was the quality of Arabic and Islamic Education teaching, and whilst we still have some work to do in this area, I am pleased that the inspection team recognised the progress that we have made in standards and attainment.  The staff of the Arabic department have worked hard and have been further supported at the College by the expertise of Ms Dannawy – to them I am especially grateful.

This year, the College improved in every area possible but in summary, the Inspection Team, led by Mr Andrew Scott from the UK, noted the following as our areas of strength and also our areas for development:

Key features of the school

  • The school had an excellent ethos because of outstanding relationships between all adults and students and a high quality of care
  • Outstanding attainment and progress in English, mathematics and science
  • The excellent attitudes and behaviour of the students
  • Students’ learning was enhanced by an exciting, diverse and rich curriculum that included a strong cultural and community awareness
  • Outstanding leadership and management by all senior staff, and especially the Principal, ensured a strong impetus, shared vision and very clear direction for the continued development of the College
  • The partnerships with parents in the development of students’ learning

Recommendations

  • Raise attainment and progress in Islamic Education and Arabic by improving teachers’ understanding of how students learn effectively
  • Improve the teaching of younger students, especially in English, by matching work more closely to their abilities
