The role of the Head of Teaching and Learning is difficult to define. I have to adapt to the needs of the teachers and students of The Winchester School and that can mean that what I planned for a day turns out to be very different as needs arise. However, my main area of responsibility is working with new teachers. As Dubai is renowned for its transient nature this is an ongoing process. Staff Induction takes place throughout the year and I have worked on trying to make entry into the school as smooth as possible. Whilst I am there to support new teachers I am also the person who observes them throughout their first year at the school, setting them targets, suggesting other teachers they can liaise with and offering advice on ways forward. With this in mind I also co-ordinate the Learning Coaches in the school. There are many other aspects, such as planning sessions, Gifted and Talented sessions, leading training sessions and most importantly, being there for all the teachers when they need to discuss issues of teaching and learning. Creativity and adaptability are the keys to success in this role alongside a clear vision of where the school wants to be.
