“I want to be a teacher and the only place where I want to teach is GEMS Hampshire School!” Constance, Age 9
Every moment of every day is a learning experience. The curriculum is at the heart of the school, but the national curriculum subjects are only part of the curriculum. The real curriculum is the entire planned learning experience. It includes all of the important subjects but also events, such as school plays, the routines of the school day and what children do during time in and out of school. Our whole school is a learning community.
We provide a broad and balanced, stimulating curriculum that is carefully co-ordinated across the school to ensure continuity and progression. It develops children's knowledge, skills and talents, supporting them to become reflective, problem-solving independent learners. The balance and range of subjects ensures they make maximum progress and are prepared for higher education and lifelong learning.
The school has three stages:
Kindergarten and Reception – ages 3-5 at Wetherby Place
Our youngest children learn in a family environment that makes their first experience of school exciting and simulating.
Pre-preparatory – ages 5-8 at Manresa Road
Here children flourish and progress in a secure, friendly and exciting environment.
Preparatory – ages 8-13 at Manresa Road
Children at this stage receive specialist teaching and are prepared for transfer to their senior schools. Our teaching methods not only encourage high academic standards but also enjoyment of learning and independent thought.
The curriculum framework at GEMS Hampshire School is based on the National Curriculum for England from Foundation Stage to Year 8 as well as the Independent Schools Common Entrance examinations syllabus. Key Skills that underpin success in education, employment, lifelong learning and personal development are embedded in planning.
GEMS Hampshire School provides a vibrant, inclusive and creative learning environment that encourages challenge, curiosity and choice. Our excellent standards create a learning programme that is exceptionally rich, relevant and fun.
The National Curriculum for England is based on a structured and broad framework that outlines expected levels of achievement for the duration of the student’s education. The curriculum also provides a regular programme of student assessment and evaluation to ensure that students are working towards levels of attainment appropriate to their age and capability. The National Curriculum for England is divided into Key Stages.
The curriculum at GEMS Hampshire School is also underpinned by the GEMS core values of World Citizenship, Leadership Qualities, Universal Values and Forward Thinking. These values are embedded into curriculum planning so that pupils are not only prepared for academic success, but equipped to be well-rounded lifelong learners and responsible, proactive members of the global community, poised to engage the future with competence and confidence.
The preparation of our pupils for their future in a world where globalisation and technology are driving rapid change requires that the curriculum at every point include the use of ICT to enhance its delivery and to draw on world resources.
