Rounders

The main sport for the girls in the summer term is Rounders. This is taught in their games afternoons as well as senior and junior lunchtime clubs. There is also a junior Rounders club available for the boys to take part in afterschool.

We have 8 Rounders teams at present in the school ranging from Year 3 to Year 10, and they play regular matches against other state and Independent schools. The seniors are involved in the Basingstoke and Deane Sport Partnership and compete in the Rounders league.

At Sherfield we believe that is it good to start the pupils playing Rounders at an early age, therefore in Pre Reception to Year 2 the pupils begin understand basic rules and concepts within Rounders and also start to develop their hand eye co-ordination with the use of batting and bowling activities.

In the senior school the Rounders teams are encouraged to develop more of a tactical understanding of the rules and we look to encourage the pupils to use dynamic fielding strategies.

Match Reports

Thursday 16 May 2013

Sherfield U13   3 v 4    Brighton Hill U13

Thursday 16th May we travelled to Brighton Hill to play one of our last league games. We had to wait as Brighton Hill had already started a match against Cranborne School and Brighton Hill looked like a very good team.

We didn’t manage to start the match until 4pm so we could only play one innings which was a shame but we knew we had to put everything into the one innings we had.

We won the toss up so we chose to field first and field well we did. Brighton Hill scored 17 rounders against Cranborne so we knew we had to be on the ball. First batter came up and was stumped out, the next did a humongous hit and scored a full rounder, the next half a rounder, then the next was stumped out. Brighton Hill then managed to score 5 half rounders in a row and we caught the last batter out making their score 4 rounders meaning if we batted well we could win.

First to bat was Lydia M, one rounder scored straight away, this was looking good for us, then Sophie W and Georgia B had to stop at first base, Alyssa C scored half a rounder from having two no balls, then she was stumped out at second. Hayley C had to wait at first base and Katie J scored half a rounder. Madeline K and Hannah R got to second base but didn’t score as they’d missed the ball, then Lydia was back in but she was stumped out too. Everyone had another bat but unfortunately no further rounders were scored so our final score was 3 rounders.

The girls played really well and I’m really pleased with the effort the team are putting into extra practices, the practices are definitely paying off as we only allowed the team to score 4 rounders!

Well done girls, last match next week and the re-organised tournament to look forward to.

U13 Rounders Vs Costello & The Hurst

Sherfield 7 vs Costello 2

On a very cold and windy 9th May we were playing 2 matches, one against Costello and one against the Hurst.

We played Costello first and due to the weather we decided to play one innings of 20 good balls. The team consisted of Lydia M, Sophie W, Georgia B, Alyssa C, Hayley C, Maddie K, Katie J and Hannah R.

We lost the toss so we were batting first. The girls have been practicing hard throughout their lunch breaks, after school clubs and games lessons so we were prepared and ready.

Lydia started us off with a good hit scoring half a rounder, Sophie scored half, Georgia then scored half for having 2 no balls, then she scored another half by hitting and getting to second base, Alyssa got to first base as did Hayley and Maddie, Katie scored half a rounder and Hannah could have scored half but Costello managed to stump her out at 4th base. Lydia continued with another huge hit to score a full rounder, Sophie was stumped out at 3rd base, Georgia scored a rounder, Katie scored another half, followed by Georgia another full rounder, Alyssa half and Maddie half, what a game! A total of 7 rounders.

We fielded well too, we managed to get 5 members of the team out and only allowed 4 half rounders throughout the whole innings, a total of 2 rounders scored by Costello. We knew exactly what we were doing and all the fielding practice had paid off. Excellent effort from all the girls in this match, well done!

Sherfield U13     5  vs 3    The Hurst U13

Straight after the Costello match we played The Hurst and again we lost the toss so we were batting first. Lydia started with a good hit and scored half a rounder, Sophie next with a huge hit scoring a full rounder, Georgia missed, Alyssa scored half, Hayley scored half. In their second bat Sophie scored another half, Georgia was stumped out at second base, Alyssa scored a full rounder, Lydia half, Sophie half, and then on the last bat Hannah was stumped out at second, overall another good innings and a total of 5 rounders scored.

We continued to field well and we got the 3rd batter out, by the 8th batter nothing had been scored. 8th batter came in and did a huge hit and scored a full rounder. The next batter scored half, then the next scored half, I could see the girls starting to worry. They kept strong and stopped the batters getting to second base. With only one batter left we knew that we could win this game as well but again it was an excellent bat and a full rounder was scored. Making the total score to the Hurst 3 and Sherfield 5.

Well done girls, just one more league game and the tournament next week, keep up the hard work!

Thursday 2 May 2013

Sherfield U13   6 v 7.5   U13 Challoner

6 – 7.5

On Thursday 2nd May we travelled to Challoner to play our under 13 rounders league fixture, we had just played and won against the Vyne and now we were playing Challoner.

We were batting first, Lydia M started the game off with a huge hit and scored a full rounder, Sophie W was next; she missed and got to first base. Georgia B hit and scored half as did Alyssa C. Hayley C, Katie J and Hannah R all tried their best but only got to first base; the Challoner team were fielding well. On Lydia’s second bat she did another huge hit and scored a full rounder, Georgia B did a great hit and ran so fast that she fell over between second and third base meaning she hat to stop at third so scored half a rounder. Alyssa scored another half as did Katie J, Hannah R was stumped out, Sophie W scored another full rounder and Alyssa C scored another half rounder. In total we did well scoring 6 rounders.

Challoner are known for being great batters, within the first 8 batters they had already scored 4 rounders, we continued to field well but made some silly mistakes and misfielded the ball. Challoner went on to score a further 3.5 rounders but we didn’t make it easy for them, Hannah R was backing up fourth base and she tried so hard to get the ball to the base before the batter that they had a huge collision, both ended up on the floor and the rounder was awarded to the batter, great effort though Hannah!

The final score was Challoner 7.5, Sherfield 6. The girls did so well, you should feel very proud.

Sherfield U13   9 v 1.5    The Vyne U13

9 – 1.5

On Thursday 2nd May we travelled to Challoner to play our under 13 rounders league fixture.

We had a good practice session before we left and we were playing well so the girls were in high spirits.

The match started and due to time we were only playing one innings and we were batting first. We started off well with Lydia M, Sophie W and Georgia B scoring half rounders, the Vyne School was fielding well and Alyssa C and Hayley C did good hits but had to stop at first base. Madeline K scored half a rounder on her first hit, Katie J and Hannah R didn’t score. Lydia M then came up for her second hit and wow what a hit it went over the top of all the fielders and beyond, if she was allowed she could have run round the diamond three times so one full rounder scored! Sophie W scored half a rounder from having two no balls and then did another huge hit to score another full rounder. Hayley C also scored a rounder and Katie J scored half. Just a few balls left to go and Sophie W scored another rounder and Georgia finished off with scoring another half! What an innings for Sherfield scoring a huge 9 rounders!

Next we were fielding, we knew that we were in a good position we just needed to get the ball to second base every time and that’s what we tried to do. The Vyne scored half a rounder on their 7th batter and then a full rounder on their last batter. Scoring 1.5 rounders in total.

Well done to Sherfield girls we played brilliantly!

Thursday 25th April 2013

Sherfield U13    4.5 v 3   Everest U13

On Thursday 25th April the year 8 girls had their first rounders match against Everest school.

The girls were excited about the match and felt quite confident.

When we arrived we were batting first and Lydia M started us off, she did a good hit but the fielding team got the ball quickly to second, Sophie W was next then Georgia, both no score, Alyssa C scored half a rounder, Hayley C batted next, then Maddie K who scored half a rounder along with Katie J and then Hannah R, after one hit each all were still in and 1.5 rounders scored. Georgia B on her next bat scored another half a rounder and Hayley C scored half a rounder from the bowler bowling two no balls.

Everest were batting and the first player managed to do a huge hit to score the first full rounder of the game, however we managed to field really well and no more half or full rounders were scored in the first innings.

The start of the second innings we were in the lead and we wanted to keep this lead. Lydia M scored half a rounder but then Georgia B and Alyssa C were fielded out. Maddie K scored another half and then Katie J was fielded out, Lydia and Sophie scored another half making the score for Sherfield a total of 4.5 rounders.

Everest needed 4 rounders to win and we were determined not to let that happen. We started off well getting the 4th and 5th batters out, after the 10th ball still no rounders scored, the 11th ball we got the batter out, the 12th ball the batter managed to score a full rounder, 13th ball half a rounder, ball numbers 14 and 15 both out and then they finished off on the 16th ball scoring half a rounder taking Everest’s total to 3.

Overall score Sherfield 4.5 rounders, Everest 3 rounders.

Well done to all the girls who took part, hopefully we will continue playing well against the other schools.
