Sports Day
The annual sports days are one of the highlights, not only of the sporting calendar, but the school calendar. They provide an opportunity for all pupils from Pre Reception to Seniors to take part in events and to win points for their house.

Senior Sports Day
On a fine June afternoon the senior school invaded the school field to compete in Sherfield’s Senior School Sports Day. There was some great anticipation in the air surrounding the Olympic themed day and silence fell for the national anthems. First that of Great Britain (Buckfield), then for the USA (Wynstow), followed by Jamaica (Lydney) and finished off with Australia (Loddon). The national anthems were closely followed by the arrival of the torch bearers’ one with a torch specially designed by Miss Driver which had been passed throughout the school for the past 4 weeks and also a REAL OLYMPIC TORCH (a huge thanks goes to Mrs Gascoyne for this one).
The day started with year 9, 10 and 12 in the field and year 7 and 8 on the track. After a couple of closely fought track events had been completed a huge bang was heard. This was the noise of Bob J smashing his own year 9 and 10 discus record with a throw of 26.70m. Then another broken as younger brother Ali J claimed the long jump record with a jump of 5.50m. A record that had been in place for the past 4 years! What a day for the Johnson’s (more to come!). The record breaking wasn’t finished there with Henry M equalling the high jump record of 1.50m – a great effort. On the track the year 7 and 8’s were treating the crowd to some excellent running in all disciplines. In the year 12 Pentathlon event it was Alexander C-S and Seraj A leading the way for the boys and Alexandra J and Sarja Stendel for the girls.
At the halfway stage the Year 9, 10 and 12’s switched to track and the year 7 and 8’s to the field. It didn’t take long in the field for the first year 7 and 8 record to fall with Viren A taking the shot put title throwing a school record 9.30m. On the track it was Tallula C who won the 800m crown and at the same time taking 5 seconds off Pip P’s record set last year with a time of 3.03mins. As with all sports days the relays finished off proceedings and again they didn’t disappoint with some excellent changeovers and powerful running.
The moment came for the results and the Victor Lodorum Award went to William J winning all the events he took part in. The Vitrix Lodorum went to Molly L who showed some outstanding running in the sprint events taking both the 100m and 200m crowns. The top male Pentathlete went to Seraj A and top female Pentathlete went to Alexandra J and Sarja S. The biggest cheer however went up from Loddon as overall house winners, just pipping Lydney to the post with Buckfield in third and Wynstow in fourth.
A huge thank you must go out to Ian Griffiths and his team for preparing the track and field event areas also Mrs Holliman, Pam and Joyce for providing refreshments throughout the day. A thank you must also go to Toby B for setting up the sound equipment as well as all of the Sherfield staff for coming out to help with various events during the day and to the family and friends of all of the athletes for coming to watch on a glorious afternoon.
