At GEMS Wellington International School your child will experience a highly effective and inclusive environment which will inspire them to achieve and succeed.

Our school offers a unique structure for students to support their education through the model of a Lower, Middle and Upper School. With this, students will journey from FS1 to Year 4 in our Lower School focusing on learning through play and active learning in our bespoke ‘Learning Zones’ which help students develop their creativity, motor skills, STEAM understanding and digital awareness, truly engaging and exciting them about learning and the wider world. The transition into the Middle School in Year 5 sees students developing their independence and critical thinking skills through a tailored curriculum taught by core specialist teachers, including secondary specialists who focus on enhancing the curriculum across Year 5 and Year 6, making a seamless transition into Year 7. Throughout Middle School, we continue to embed High Performance Learning (HPL) through carefully planned lessons which incorporate the 5 Advanced Cognitive Performance Characteristics (ACPs) and are identified as the following skills: Meta-cognition, Linking, Realising, Creating and Analysing.

From here, students’ learning skills continue to develop; GCSE skills and attributes are mapped back to fully prepare our students for when they progress into the Upper School. At WIS, this journey to success is accelerated in Year 10 and 11, with the breadth of subjects on offer for GCSE, including Business Studies, Design Technology and Psychology and we pride ourselves on preparing our students for Higher Education through personalised support, learning and pathways which encourage independence, debate and discussion. We are proud of what our educational culture instills and we are still one of the highest achieving non-selective schools in Dubai. In 2020-21, more than one third of our students gained a minimum of 40 IBDP points, which is particularly impressive as the world average IBDP points is 33. Furthermore, the number of students achieving 35 points or above has more than doubled in the last two years.

As a fully inclusive international school, enabling a first-class educational experience for students aged three to eighteen years, we ensure that all students are supported and challenged to achieve success. We recognise the uniqueness of each child through learning opportunities that promote challenge and personalised learning at all levels. A plethora of enriching learning opportunities, within and beyond the classroom, ensure that students enjoy sporting and benefit from highly creative and stimulating experiences. Visits, trips, team competitions, our Explore, Enrich Excite (EEE) programme, which offers a range of clubs and extra activities, as well as an emphasis on memorable learning moments ensure high levels of engagement at WIS, which supports outstanding attainment and progress from Foundation Stage through to IB level.

Students benefit from:

  • Very high-quality teaching in all subject areas from UK trained teachers, which enables students to attain the highest grades
  • State of the art facilities, such as specialised IB Support Centre, Food Technology Classroom, Design Technology and Engineering Workshop, indoor and outdoor swimming pool, dance studio and individual music practice rooms
  • A rich and innovative curriculum in which a wide range of interesting courses and personalised pathways, alongside various industry links are available to meet the needs of students, especially in the Post-16 phase
  • Stimulating education for young children in which they thrive, have fun and make outstanding progress in English, Mathematics and Science
  • Development of personal and social skills to a very high level in a safe, secure and caring environment
  • An inclusive education in which students with SEND are very effectively supported and challenged resulting in very good progress at each stage of their education

Maryssa O'Connor

I am delighted to be able to welcome you to GEMS Wellington International School, our consistently outstanding school in the centre of Dubai. WIS will always strive for academic excellence in achievement and personal wellbeing, and to create a supportive and inclusive community. We celebrate individual successes and provide a fulfilling education that endures long after the examination results have been published.

Our purpose as educators is to encourage intellectual curiosity, independent thought and effective learning habits. From an early age, we encourage students to be dynamically intellectual, culturally creative and develop independence, so by the time they graduate, they are well prepared for the expected, but can also tackle the unknowns.

The success of a student cannot be measured only by their academic success alone, but also by the development of their social and interpersonal skills and contribution to school life. Students have over ninety clubs and activities, encompassing the creative arts, outdoor education and a vast array of sports, to choose from in school. We help our students to develop existing interests and to find new ones that will stay with them for life,

Here at WIS our students are individuals with great potential, unique strengths and interests and I believe that it is our duty as a school to add value to each student by helping them achieve academic success and the joy of learning in an inclusive community in which all our students, parents and staff feel challenged, valued and successful.

Maryssa O’ Connor has successfully led schools in the UK for over eighteen years and was previously the Vice Principal at GEMS Wellington International School.

“I am deeply committed to ensuring students are given every opportunity to experience exceptional learning opportunities in enabling environments – safe, happy, challenged and successful. Students, staff and parents feeling proud of their efforts and achievements are key drivers for me professionally. Inspiring others to drive forward to reach their goals, never giving up when faced with challenge, is for me what lifelong learning and education are all about.”
