UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
United States is one of the most popular choice among the students for further studies.
Before selecting any university or a college in the US what should a student know about them?
In the US here are more than 3600 Institutes for education. These are community colleges, universities and technology and vocational colleges. Colleges tend to be smaller and usually offer only undergraduate degrees, while a university also offers graduate degrees. The two year Institutions, which are sometimes referred to as community or junior colleges, give the associate degree after completion of a specific two-year, full time program.
There are two basic types of program at the two year institutions. Some programs are strictly academic and designed to prepare students to transfer to four –year institution with a bachelor’s degree programs. Others are more practical or applied and provide career training in specific areas.
A growing number of international students are choosing to study at community colleges. Tuition costs are often lower at two-year than at four-year institutions, and many have agreements to allow students on transfer programs to move easily into the third year of a bachelor's degree at the local state university.
Universities are either private or public.
State universities are founded and subsidized by U.S. state governments to provide low-cost education to residents of that state. They may also be called public universities to distinguish them from private institutions. Some include the words "state university" in their title or include a regional element such as "eastern" or "northern." State universities tend to be very large, with enrollments of 20,000 or more students, and generally admit a wider range of students than private universities. State university tuition costs are generally lower than those of private universities. International students, as well as those from other states, are considered out-of-state residents and therefore do not benefit from reduced tuition at state institutions. In addition, international students may have to fulfill higher admission requirements than in-state residents.
Private Universities
Private institutions are funded by a combination of endowments, tuition fees, research grants, and gifts from their alumni. Tuition fees tend to be higher at private universities than at state universities, but there is no distinction made between state and non-state residents. Colleges with a religious affiliation and single-sex colleges are private. In general, private universities have enrollments of fewer than 20,000 students, and private colleges may have 2,000 or fewer students on their campuses.
Technical and Vocational Colleges
These institutions specialize in preparing students for entry into the world of work. They offer certificate and other short-term programs that train students in the theory behind a specific vocation or technology, as well as in how to work with the technology, these programs usually last two years or less. There are several thousand technical and vocational colleges across the United States, and they may be private or public institutions.
The US educational system is flexible in many ways. The first one to two years of most undergraduate program focus primarily on the education in arts and science. This exposes students to a variety of academic disciplines and shows them how these fields are related.
One of the most attractive features of the bachelor's degree program in the United States is that it is highly flexible. You can usually choose from a wide variety of courses and create your own unique program of study. The degree is awarded after you complete a specified number of credits, which are usually completed in four years of full-time study. The first year is called the freshman year; the second is called sophomore; the third, junior; and the fourth, senior.
The bachelor's degree in the US usually takes four years to complete, though some students take slightly less time to finish, and others may take longer. An important part of the educational experience in the US is participation in the non academic social and “extra curricular” activities on campus which include sports, student’s government, music, drama and other individual programs. These programs are designed to contribute to your personal growth provide recreation create opportunities to meet new people with similar interests and prepare you for future leadership roles upon graduation.

1. Research on Colleges
The degree and major you decide to pursue affects the selection of your College/University. In the U.S. there are more than 3,600 Universities/Colleges & more than 600 major fields of study are offered at the institutions.
Choosing a few universities from the 3,600 is not or will not be an easy task. There are certain factors that has to be taken into consideration while selecting those few universities like the finance, location of the university, whether its in a town or a city, size of the university, weather, number of international students on the campus, extra curricular activities available on campus especially if you are interested in any sports activities, whether the university is private/public, the faculty qualifications and the description of the program.
Higher education in most foreign countries is expensive. To get the best education your high school offers–a crucial step toward making yourself competitive in college admissions–start early. "In all admissions the freshman year is more important than senior year," says Tim Washburn, executive director of admissions and records at the University of Washington in Seattle. Colleges and universities use the SAT as only one of many factors in admissions decisions

2. Accreditation
Accreditation assures you that the Universities have met certain standards. A degree from non-accredited College/Universities may not be recognized by other educational institutes or by employees Because of the size and variety of higher education in the United States, the quality of any given Institute/University/College and its programme, even when accredited is hard to determine.
The most expensive college/University/Institute may not necessarily be the best, nor is every programme at a highly regarded Institute/College/University necessarily is of the same high quality.
3. Financial Aid
Since education overseas is expensive, one has to search for Colleges/Universities that also meet your financial requirements along with the major you want to do.
Though little aid is available for the undergraduates it’s always reserved for one of the best and deserving students.
Education overseas involves a number of costs. The most apparent costs are the tuition fees which vary from University to University. It range from $15,000 to $45,000 per annum, depending on the course and the institution ; while books, study materials and living costs could add up to another $8,000-$10,000 per year Living expenses vary from state to state. The kind of accommodation you choose will affect your living expenses. Renting an apartment of your own might prove more expensive than sharing an apartment with college mates or staying on campus in the University dorms.
Personal and Miscellaneous expenses include the expenses of phone calls, eating out, going for movies, attending concerts and so on. However, financial assistance is available for study in the US, in the form of scholarships, grants student employment or financial assistance from the university and other US foundations. Although students at the under graduate level are given limited scholarships in their first year of study, they could be in the form of tuition waivers based on high school academic and co-curricular performance, need based grants and athletic scholarships etc. For more details on scholarships please visit. www.usnews.com (A guide to scholarships)

4. Admission Requirements
Admission requirements vary from institute to institute depending on the field of study. Besides a good academic record undergraduate students are required to appear for SAT I, TOEFL, which is normally compulsory for all University admissions.
TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language
Most Undergraduates programs will require the TOEFL exam for all international students to ensure they have adequate proficiency in English to succeed in the US colleges. Its only English Grammar and it deals with your aptitude for English both in understanding and using it.
It has three sections:
1) Deals with error corrections.
2) Deals with listening skills
3) Deals with grammar
The total marks are 677 the college require a minimum of 550 marks.
The website for TOEFL will give you all the information regarding the dates of the test and the other details. Website for TOEFL www.toefl.org.
In Dubai you can register for TOEFL at AMIDEAST in Knowledge Village.
SAT
The SAT I measures the critical thinking skills you'll need for academic success in college. It assesses how well you analyze and solve problems. SAT scores are used for college admission purposes because the test predicts college success. The SAT assesses how well you analyze and solve problems—skills you learned in school that you'll need in college. The SAT is typically taken by high school juniors and seniors. Each section of the SAT is scored on a scale of 200—800, with two writing sub scores for multiple-choice and the essay.
The SAT is the best independent, standardized measure of a student's college readiness. It is standardized across all students, schools, and states, providing a common and objective scale for comparison. High school grades are a very useful indicator of how students perform in college, yet there is great variation in grading standards and course rigor within and across high schools. The total testing time for the SAT is 3 hours and 45 minutes. As mentioned above one can give the SAT I & TOEFL when in class XI.
SAT II is a more specialized test that consists of specific subjects such as physics, chemistry, maths, etc. The maximum number of subjects to be taken are three, but it is not necessary to take all three subjects at the same time you can even take one or two subjects at a time. You can take this tests any number of times there is no restriction to the number of tests given. The total marks are 2400, each subject carries 800 marks. The total marks are out of 2400 and the total time of each test is an hour. The ideal scores are above 2000. The SAT II’s are not a substitute for the SAT I.
Most selective colleges require applicants to take the SAT I and one or more SAT II examinations. Unlike the SAT I, these exams are designed to test students' knowledge in specific high school subjects. For example, the SAT II contains questions only related to the relevant subject matter. The SAT II contains a large amount of class twelve syllabus, so preferably you can give it around June of class XII where you already have an idea of what is to be studied and you do a crash course or just a light introduction to the class XII syllabus. This puts you in a better position to give the tests and score well in them. The ideal score is above 2000. Calculators are allowed for the tests. SAT II is not compulsory as SAT I. Each college varies with requirement for SAT II. The test scores for SAT I and SAT II and TOEFL are valid for two years.
There are no restrictions on the number of times the SAT & TOEFL can be given. But if you give the test more than two times it creates a bad impression, and if the test is given more than once the best scores are taken into consideration

5. The Final Selection of Colleges.
After making a list of 8-10 Universities that offer the fields of study in which you are interested, investigate each University carefully to determine whether the program offers the particular specializations you seek.
Narrow your list of Universities to the final 6-8 Universities by taking into consideration your SAT I and TOEFL scores, the location, weather and mainly your financial position.
The best College/University for you is the one that meets your own personal requirements and preferences.
In making your selection, keep your educational goal in mind, as well as your field of study and the research specializations and degrees offered.
6. The Application Process
Once you have decided your list of Colleges immediately download the application forms from the respective websites as most applications are available online. Once you have submitted your application online, a screen containing your confirmation number will appear. Your application will remain active in their database. If your qualifications meet their needs, they will contact you.
Get your documents ready by September for early decision and October/November for regular decision as most of the Universities have deadlines in December – January. The application requires various documents like merit certificates you receive from grade nine in academics, extra-curricular activities and sports. These are all sent in photocopies and need to be verified by the school authorities and so you need get all photocopies stamped by the school authorities. (Please do not send any original certificates)You will also require original school transcripts and original reference/recommendation letters from your teachers who know you really well.
Financial statements have to be submitted too. The financial statements are basically to make sure that your parents or guardians are able to support you financially. The most important part of the application is the essays that have to be written. The general topics given are:
i) A personal Statement that contains a description about yourself, your attitudes etc.
(ii) An experience/person that had a profound effect on your life and what was the effect
(iii) A local, national, regional or international issue that you feel is important. (iv) Any creative essay topic.
Tips For Filling The Application Forms:
Neatness is important. You risk delay or even denial of admission if you send an incomplete application. University admissions committees will not review your application without recommendations and transcripts which must be officially authorized.
The application forms are usually simple but tedious.
Always photocopy all the material to be filled.
First fill the photocopy then fill the originals.
Always type out the essays, unless specifically asked to be handwritten.
The application form should be neat and all the recommendations of teachers or any other comments that take up a lot of space should be typed neatly on a separate A4 size paper or school letter head.
Keep the copies of all material sent.
Note when and to whom application materials are mailed.
Decide whether you will live in housing on-campus or off campus
Essay
The essay is an extremely important part of the application because it gives the faculty assessing your application a major impression of you as an individual. What are your goals? Do you write clearly? Do your interests really match those of the department or school? Can you express your ideas effectively? Are there unique things about you that set you apart from other applicants and make you particularly desirable as a student?
1. Apply For Visa
International students entering the U.S. as non-immigrants for the purpose of pursuing academic or educational objectives enter on F-1 Student visas. Once the university has accepted the international student for the admission they mail the visa documents (I-20 for F-1 visa) directly to the international students.
In order to apply for a nonimmigrant visa, applicants must appear in person for an interview. Appointments for the interview may be obtained by calling +973 90000 797, an automated phone appointment system based in Bahrain. According to new requirements, some visa applicants are required to undergo additional administrative processing as part of our security clearance procedure. One cannot predict the amount of time required to complete this process. However, it is suggested that all nonimmigrant visa applicants apply well in advance to allow time for the clearance process.
Students can apply for visas up to 120 days before they begin their studies and enter the U.S. up to 45 days before the start of classes. The average wait for a Non-Immigrant Visa appointment has been reduced to 1-2 days in Abu Dhabi and 5-6 days in Dubai. Most approved visas are ready within 24 hours; the others normally are completed within 2 weeks. After 1st March the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the U.S. Consulate in Dubai will no longer accept handwritten applications.
For detailed information on Visa process please visit the following website http://dubai.uscons ulate.gov. And click on “Visas to the U.S.
United Kingdom
The United Kingdom offers a unique environmentfor learning and development, which is why so many international students come here. In 2002 the UK government allowed the international students to stay on to work at the end of their course. UK qualifications are recognized and respected throughout the world. There are more than three thousand educational institutions that welcome international students in the UK.
You can choose from a variety of routes through the education and training system, combining different types of course according to your needs and abilities. When you come to the UK, you get four countries in one: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. UK degrees can take only three years plus one-year foundation if required and postgraduate Master's courses only one year compared with four years and two years in most other countries.
The UK has many independent colleges of further and higher education. These colleges are mostly relatively small, provide a supportive environment and often cater specifically for overseas students. British Accreditation Council (BAC) is the most reliable guide in choosing between independent colleges.
All admissions in UK are done through UCAS. UCAS can help you decide where and what to study and how to apply.
UCAS
The benefits of applying for a UK degree course through the UCAS system are:
• You can make up to six applications on a single form
• You can apply to a very wide range of courses and institutions
• All UCAS institutions are recognized by the UK Government
• All the institutions offer courses that are validated by UK universities
• You can get application forms from your local British Council office.
• UCAS has regular contact with admissions staff and is familiar with their requirements
• UCAS monitors the progress of your application from start to finish.
British Council offices throughout the world offer assistance to students seeking to study in the UK. Some offices advice students help them fill in application forms and send the forms off for them. Some can help you apply over the Internet. All offices have a wide range of information materials and resources, as well as university and college prospectuses, which you can consult for reference. The best time to begin preparing your application for degree courses is June to August a year before the September/October when you would like to start.
The UCAS Application Process
You may apply to up to six institutions on a single UCAS application form. The current fee for applying through this system is £5 for a single choice and £15 for up to six choices. You can submit only one UCAS application form per year. When UCAS receives your application form, it will send a copy to each of your chosen institutions. Each institution will consider your application and send details of its decision to UCAS. UCAS will forward the decision to you. For each application, three outcomes are possible. Don't respond to any offers you receive until UCAS asks you to reply
UCAS Forms
Your UCAS form is the opportunity to make a good first impression. The following tips will help UCAS process the form more quickly. Forms are reduced in size when they are forwarded to admissions tutors, so you'll need to write clearly and in a black ballpoint pen or black type. The UCAS form is made up of twelve sections. If you're using a computer, the type size should be at least twelve points. Always write inside the boxes. Any important information that doesn't fit inside the boxes can always be sent directly to universities and colleges, after you've received acknowledgement of your application from UCAS. You shouldn't attach extra sheets of paper to your form, or send copies of certificates or other documents. You must return the original form, and not a photocopy, to UCAS office.
Admission Requirements
In UK each Colleges/Universities have their own criteria for admitting students. The entry requirements for the students desiring to study in UK are:
Those students who finish their schooling from ‘A’ levels, ‘O’ levels or GCSE level or above. Higher Secondary School Certificate: Indian School Certificate (ISC)/ intermediate certificate are considered for admission to undergraduate courses in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Students with excellent percentage in class 12 examinations of CBSE and ICSE may be considered for admission to undergraduate courses in Science and Humanities. If your Indian School-Leaving Certificate is not accepted for direct entry to a bachelor’s degree course, students may consider an Access / Bridging / Foundation course. These courses are designed to bridge the gap between overseas qualifications and normal entrance requirements in the UK.

Canada
Education in Canada is on the same lines as in the U.S. The average cost of education in Canada is about 1/3 that of the education in the U.S. English and French are the official languages of Canada in which the education is imparted. International students on furnishing evidence of their proficiency in any one of these languages are eligible for admission.
For English language TOEFL/IELTS will be required. In Canada there is no entrance test into undergraduate programs as each university evaluates student’s high school transcripts for admission. Specific requirements for institutions will vary; it’s advisable to check directly with the institutions. You must fulfill the admissions requirements of the institution you would like to attend. You need a letter of acceptance from the institution. Once you have obtained a letter of acceptance from an institution, you will need to find out from Citizenship and Immigration Canada what type of authorization/visa you require to enter Canada to study.
You will need to prove to the Canadian visa officer that you have the economic means to pay for your education and living expenses in Canada.
Scholarships to international students are available at some Canadian institutions for students with exceptional results. The amount awarded varies from one institution to another and usually covers only part of a student's education and living expenses.
International students should be aware that applying to the Canadian University is relatively competitive and the fees are higher than the Canadian applicants. Canada follows similar semester pattern as that of the U.S, where the annual year is divided into two semesters.

India
India today offers the second largest higher education network in the world. Universities in India are set up by the Central Higher Education Board in India and have evolved in distinct and divergent streams with each stream being monitored by an apex body, indirectly controlled by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
The universities are mostly funded by the state governments. However, there are 20 important universities called Central universities, which are maintained by the Union Government and because of their relatively large funding, they have an edge over the others.
The engineering education and business schools are monitored and accredited by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) while medical education in India is monitored and accredited by the Medical Council of India (MCI). Agriculture education and research is monitored by the Indian Council for Agriculture Research. Apart from these, National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) controls all the teacher training institutions in the country.
Apart from these, the country has some well-respected engineering, management and medical education institutions which are directly funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Union Government or State Governments by means of legislation, while colleges are established by the State Governments or private bodies / trusts.
All colleges are affiliated to some university. The pre-university education has, of late, seen a dynamic increase in engineering and medical admissions.
Different Types of Universities in India
Central or State Universities - while the former are funded directly by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the latter are set up and funded by the various state governments.
Deemed Universities
These enjoy the same academic status and privileges as a university. Examples are the Deccan College of Post Graduate and Research Institute, Pune; Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai; Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore; etc.
Institutions of National Importance
Are university-level institutions that are established or designated by Acts of Parliament and funded by the Central Government. These include the Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Management and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, etc.
Most universities are 'affiliating universities', which prescribe to the affiliated colleges the admission criteria and courses of study, hold examinations and award degrees. University departments impart postgraduate education and conduct and promote research in a variety of disciplines.
Undergraduate and, to some extent, postgraduate instruction is imparted by the colleges affiliated to a particular university.
Classification of Colleges
Colleges in India come under four different categories. This categorization is done on the basis of the kind of courses offered by them (professional/ vocational) / their ownership status (Private/ Government) or their relationship with the university (affiliated/university owned).
University Colleges
These colleges are managed by the university itself and situated mostly in the university campus.
Government Colleges
The government colleges are few, only about 15-20 percent of the total. They are managed by state governments. As in case of other colleges, the university to which these colleges are affiliated, conducts their examination, lays down the courses of studies and awards the degrees.
Professional Colleges
The professional colleges are mostly besides others in the disciplines of medicine, engineering and management. These are sponsored and managed either by the government or by private initiative.
Privately Managed colleges
About 70% of the colleges are founded by the privately owned trusts or societies. But these institutes are also governed by the rules and regulations of the university they are affiliated to. Though initially started up as a private initiative, the state government also funds these colleges
Courses offered at Higher Education Level
Indian Universities offer various courses in the following disciplines.
- Engineering and Technology
- Computer Sciences
- Information Technology
- Biotechnology and Bio-informatics.
- Medical
- Dentistry
- Nursing
- Pharmacy
- Paramedical.
- Agriculture / Veterinary Sciences
- Dairy Technology
- Fisheries
- Arts & Fine Arts
- Humanities
- Social Sciences
- Commerce
- Science
- Management
- Hotel Management & Catering Technology
- Travel and Tourism
- Fashion Design & Technology.
The academic programmes are offered at Vocational Diploma, Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral levels.
Vocational Education
Vocational Education at Certificate level are offered by 1500 vocational institutions in the country in the areas of agriculture, business, commerce, health and Para-medical, home science and humanities in addition to engineering trades.
There are three principle levels of qualifications within the higher education system in the country. These are:
Undergraduate Courses
Undergraduate courses, in general, are of three years leading to Bachelor degrees. The universities and higher education institutes award Bachelor's degree in Arts, Science, Commerce, etc. However, undergraduate courses leading to a first degree in professional subjects like Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy are of a longer duration ranging from four to five and a half years. Most of the engineering courses are for duration of four years, while the medical courses are for duration of about five and a half years.
Postgraduate Courses
Postgraduate Courses in Arts, Science, Engineering and Medicine are usually for two years ending with the award of a Master's degree. In some specialized fields for instance, for a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree, the possession of a Bachelor's degree in any discipline is required before admission can be obtained.
Some universities and higher education institutes offer a diploma or a certificate course of shorter duration courses in disciplines like Engineering, Agricultural Sciences and Computer Technology. However the duration of these courses varies from university to university.
Doctoral Courses
Doctoral courses are available only at the university colleges. These courses involve research work under a chosen/allotted guide, leading to a thesis submission and viva-voce.
Successful completion of PhD course designates the title of 'Doctor' to the individual.
