School History

Moor Allerton School was founded in 1914, originally preparing boys for entrance to the independent boarding schools at the age of 13, and to the grammar schools at 11.  Girls were first admitted in 1981 when Nursery and Infant classes were started, and now all pupils leave at 11 to attend, in the main, the local grammar schools.

The original building was on Palatine Road.  During the War years it used premises at the Ryleys School and Pownall Hall School before moving to its present site on Barlow Moor Road.  The school is situated in a pleasant area of West Didsbury in a large Victorian house, to which other buildings have been added, and it is within easy reach of the M56 and M60 motorways and other main roads.

The first four Headmasters of the School also owned it and lived, for much of their Headmastership, on the premises.  Then as the School expanded it became necessary for the Headmaster to live elsewhere. The previous headmasters were Messrs Rhodes, Oliver, Tibbs, Pugh and Clarke.

In 1980 the School was bought by Mr K McNeany who appointed Mr M J Clarke, from within the Staff, as Headmaster.  Mr Clarke had previously been a pupil (and later Head Boy) of Moor Allerton School during the Headmastership of Mr Oliver.  Following his retirement Mr Clarke was succeeded by Mr P S Millard in 2000.  There are many photographs around the School showing its past history, teachers and pupils.  In 2004, the school was taken over by GEMS UK Ltd.   GEMS Educational Advisor for our school is Prof. Patricia Preedy and Mrs Elaine Cleland.

Moor Allerton - New Building

The school has recently acquired an adjacent building, which will allow many of those on the waiting list to join the school, as it becomes two-form entry.  The new building will give new grassed playing areas, dance and music studio, new ICT Suite, school shop and much more.
