Foundation Stage

Nursery and Reception Classes

These classes form the Foundation Stage part of the
Moor Allerton - foundation stage image
national curriculum and cover the education of children from age three to five.

The staff, a teacher and Teaching Assistant for each class, are fully qualified and experienced and liase closely with the Head of Infants. Music, dance and PE are taught by specialist staff in line with the rest of school.

Each child's progress is monitored carefully and all the children are encouraged to have an enthusiasm for learning and knowledge and confidence in their ability to be successful learners.

Nursery (Ages 3+) 
Children follow a carefully planned educational programme mostly through structured play and with more formal activities when appropriate. We stress the importance of developing children's personal and social skills at this age along with the acquisition of early reading and writing skills and basic mathematical concepts. Opportunities are available for creative and physical development and we endeavour to nurture an interest in the outside world.

The children follow the curriculum guidance for the foundation stage and are working through the Stepping Stones (the intermediate levels leading up to the Early Learning Goals).

There is a natural progression as the slightly older children continue to build on and refine the skills and concepts they have been introduced early in the year. As children deepen their understanding, their confidence develops and they are able to concentrate for longer periods and become more independent. They continue to work through the Stepping Stones towards the Early Learning Goals.

Reception
In the reception year children have their fifth birthday at some point during this stage. Most of the children at Moor Allerton will have moved beyond the Early Learning Goals before the end of Reception and will be ready to progress into Key Stage 1. There is close collaboration between these classes 3 and Year 1 to ensure progression is maintained.

Assessment
Throughout these years children carry out PIPS Assessments to measure their progress against national norms.   The Performance Indicators in Primary Schools (PIPS) Project is one of the family of information systems offered by the CEM Centre at Durham University.   PIPS tracks a number of aspects of schooling as pupils move through the primary sector who gather data on individual pupils using assessment materials that are quick and easy to administer.

This data is processed at Durham and the results passed to schools. The results allow schools to look objectively at the progress and attitudes of individual pupils. PIPS feedback also enables teachers to judge their school’s performance within the context of others using the assessments.

The intention is to promote school improvement by providing professionals with high quality information.
