Sarah Hedger

Head of Child Safeguarding and Child Protection

Sara Hedger joined GEMS Education in 2014, as part of the founding senior leadership team of GEMS Metropole School in Dubai, first as Head of Primary, then Vice Principal. Since 2018, she has been working as Head of Safeguarding & Child Protection for GEMS Education as a whole, supporting schools in the UAE, Egypt, India, Saudi Arabia, Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, USA and UK. She has over 20 years’ experience of working in safeguarding and child protection in a variety of educational contexts in both the UK and UAE.

In her current role, Sara leads the overall development, implementation and monitoring of safeguarding policies and practice for over 250,000 students, providing real-time advice and guidance to country safeguarding teams on casework and embedding a safeguarding culture throughout the organisation. Sara ensures that GEMS’ safeguarding approach responds to the evolving safeguarding global landscape and reflects international best practice, through partnership and collaboration.

Prior to joining GEMS Education, Sara was a Headteacher in the UK, where she was the joint leader of the safeguarding induction programme for new Headteachers and the Designated Safeguarding Lead for a Cooperative Trust and the educational representative for a number of multi-agency safeguarding groups. She also worked as a teacher in the UK for a number of years after gaining her PGCE in 1999.

Sara has an MA in Educational Leadership from the University of Roehampton as well as the National Professional Qualification in Headship (NPQH) and is a qualified coach. She also has qualifications and training in a variety of areas including mental health first aid for adolescents and adults, safer recruitment and paediatric first aid.
