AC Water's Role in Developing a 'Zero Waste Society' as WSD

Our school's irrigation system utilizes recycled air conditioning (AC) water, which is among the most efficient ways to conserve water. We collect the water from the AC unit and store it in a designated tank with a capacity of 12,000 litres before using it for irrigation. This system allows us to water an area of up to 1451 square meters, promoting sustainable agriculture and contributing to a circular economy. Since implementing this strategy a year and a half ago, we have achieved remarkable results. We've been able to produce over 1000 kilograms of organic produce and support the growth of approximately 200 Damas trees. This initiative reflects our strong commitment to responsible water management and environmental sustainability.

The VR on the bus

Repurposing an old bus into a VR headset STEAM lab is a clear demonstration of our commitment to sustainability. This innovative project focuses on utilizing existing resources, reducing waste, and minimizing environmental impact. Moreover, the lab will prioritize sustainable practices by incorporating energy-efficient technologies, harnessing renewable energy sources, and utilizing eco-friendly materials whenever possible, underscoring the significance of sustainable innovation.

The primary objectives of this initiative are:
  • Waste Reduction and Resource Optimization: By repurposing existing assets, we aim to minimize waste and maximize the use of available resources.
  • Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Integration: The lab will feature energy-efficient technologies and incorporate renewable energy sources, reducing its carbon footprint and energy consumption.
  • Eco-Friendly Materials and Design: Whenever feasible, eco-friendly materials will be used in the construction and design of the lab to ensure sustainability.

The expected outcome of this project is the creation of a dedicated space for VR lessons, achieved through the repurposing of an old bus. This innovative approach not only showcases our commitment to sustainability but also revolutionizes STEAM education, enhances access to immersive learning experiences, and inspires the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.

Electric Vehicle Grand Prix – Future

Mobility Challenge

The Electric Vehicle Grand Prix (EVGP) is a remarkable sustainable initiative leading the global shift toward clean transportation. This project promotes electric vehicles (EVs) through an exhilarating racing competition, effectively raising awareness and expediting the adoption of eco-friendly mobility solutions. The EVGP embodies sustainability by featuring zero-emission electric cars, thereby reducing carbon footprint and air pollution. It also serves as a platform to showcase advancements in EV technology, serving as an inspiration for innovation and investment in renewable energy sources. Furthermore, the EVGP encourages collaboration among manufacturers, engineers, and enthusiasts, propelling advancements in efficiency, battery life, and charging infrastructure. Through this sustainable endeavour, we are bringing the world closer to a greener future.

In line with this vision, WSD is currently working on constructing a second electric vehicle for the Greenpower Program, targeting students aged 11 to 16. The primary aims of this project are:

  • Enhance Energy Efficiency: The project seeks to improve the energy efficiency of the vehicle, contributing to reduced energy consumption and environmental impact.
  • Integrate Renewable Energy Resources: By incorporating renewable energy sources, we aim to further reduce the carbon footprint and promote sustainable energy generation.
  • Foster Circular Economy Principles: This project aligns with circular economy principles, emphasizing resource optimization and waste reduction.

Through these objectives, we aim to advance sustainability, educate future generations, and continue our journey toward a more eco-conscious and greener world.

No Money Down the Drain

'No Money Down the Drain' is an innovative concept conceived by students at WSD. This project has evolved from an idea to reality and centres around an enhanced Reverse Osmosis system in schools, with the primary objective of reducing wastewater generated from handwashing and minimizing associated costs.

The project has garnered significant attention and received recognition on various platforms, including the recent EXPO Changemakers' Challenge. It is characterized by rigorous research and has progressed through the stages of the design thinking process, which includes empathizing, defining the problem, and ideating a solution, and is currently in the testing and implementation phase. One of the standout features of this initiative is the recycling of wastewater from handwashing through reverse osmosis, achieving an impressive 98% recovery rate. This innovative approach not only reduces water wastage but also results in cost savings, contributing to the principles of the circular economy. It showcases the power of student-led innovation and their commitment to addressing real-world challenges.
